How Ajax became Ajax.
From the first settlers to today, the moments that shaped the town.
Where the name comes from
Named in 1941 after HMS Ajax, the Royal Navy cruiser that fought in the Battle of the River Plate in 1939.
Indigenous roots
Indigenous peoples were active along Duffins and Carruthers creeks for thousands of years before settlers arrived.
Irish fur trader Mike Duffin becomes the earliest known European settler in the area. Duffins Creek, which runs through Ajax and neighbouring Pickering, is named after him, and its watershed still shapes the landscape today.
Quaker leader Timothy Rogers arrives with about 20 families. Three years later he builds saw and grist mills on Duffins Creek, giving the early settlers lumber and flour and helping the community put down lasting roots.
The Post family opens the Post Inn as a stage station on Kingston Road, which began as a trail in 1799. Travellers stopped here until the Grand Trunk Railway arrived in 1856 and the inn closed.
With the Second World War underway, Canada expropriates about 2,846 acres of farmland to build a munitions plant. Farm families lose their land, and the groundwork is laid for a brand new wartime community.
The plant's residential community is named Ajax after HMS Ajax, the warship that fought in the 1939 Battle of the River Plate. At its peak the plant employs about 9,000 workers.
Ajax gains full town status after serving as an improvement district since 1950, when its population was 5,124. The first elected council takes office on January 1, 1955, giving residents their own local government.
Town boundaries expand to include Pickering Village, Pickering Beach and Audley, and the population roughly doubles. The province also rejects a proposal to fold Ajax into Pickering, so it remains its own town.
Ajax passes 55,000 residents, a long way from the 5,689 recorded in 1955. Lakefront parks, family neighbourhoods and GO train service keep drawing newcomers from across the GTA.
Federal, Durham Region and Toronto and Region Conservation Authority leaders gather at Church Street South and Highway 401 on August 21 for an infrastructure announcement. By September the average home sells for $835,867, down 4.6% since January.
