How Whitby became Whitby.
From the first settlers to today, the moments that shaped the town.
Where the name comes from
Whitby comes from the Danish-rooted “Whitteby,” meaning “white village.” A surveyor named the township after the Yorkshire town in 1792.
A surveyor names the townships east of Toronto after towns in the North Riding of Yorkshire, England, including Whitby. The name traces back to Danish roots, from “Whitteby,” meaning white village.
Grain from the northern farmland is first shipped from Whitby Harbour, which becomes the town's chief asset. In the 1840s a road is built connecting the harbour to Lake Simcoe and Georgian Bay.
Founder Peter Perry establishes a downtown business centre, laying the foundation for the town's commercial core. Whitby grows as the harbour and the surrounding farms feed a busy local trade.
Whitby is chosen as the seat of government for the newly formed County of Ontario, giving the town the offices and prestige of a county capital, a role it held until the county ended in 1974.
The Town of Whitby is incorporated, three years after becoming the county seat. In 1857 the Township of East Whitby follows, covering the eastern half of the area around present-day Oshawa.
The Port Whitby and Port Perry Railway is built from the harbour to Port Perry. It carries grain and goods between the Lake Scugog farms and Lake Ontario shipping, strengthening Whitby's role as a port.
Camp X, a secret spy training facility, operates in Whitby during the Second World War. A monument is unveiled on the site in 1984 to recognize the hidden camp and its place in history.
The Town of Whitby and the Township of Whitby amalgamate to form the current municipality. Six years later, in 1974, the Regional Municipality of Durham is formed with Whitby's boundaries unchanged.
Highways 407 and 412 open in Whitby, giving residents fast east-west and north-south routes. Combined with GO train service, the new links reinforce Whitby's popularity with commuters.
In July plans are submitted for a high-density community at Whitby GO station, with six mixed-use towers of 33 to 45 storeys and nearly 2,400 homes. By September the average home sells for $885,319, down 5.0% since January.
