How Scugog became Scugog.
From the first settlers to today, the moments that shaped the town.
Where the name comes from
Scugog is said to come from a Mississauga word meaning “waves leap over a canoe,” a nod to the creation of Lake Scugog.
Indigenous roots
Reserve #34 of the Mississaugas of Scugog Island First Nation sits here. The Port Perry townsite was laid out on a former Indigenous village called Scugog Village.
Major Samuel Street Wilmot surveys the area as part of Reach Township. The townsite that became Port Perry was later laid out on the site of a former Indigenous village called Scugog Village.
In May, Reuben Crandell, a United Empire Loyalist, and his wife build the first European settler homestead in the area. That November, Lucy Ann Crandell becomes the first child of European descent born here.
A dam at Lindsay creates Lake Scugog, and the resulting flooding forms Scugog Island. The lake becomes the centre of the community's identity, and today it anchors Port Perry's waterfront.
Peter Perry had laid out village lots on the Lake Scugog shore in 1848, and now the townsite is officially named Port Perry. Joseph Bigelow becomes its first postmaster.
Port Perry is incorporated as a village. Local businessmen had begun working to bring a railway to town four years earlier, and their efforts were about to pay off.
The first train on the Port Whitby and Port Perry Railway reaches the Port Perry terminus. The line links Lake Scugog's farms to the harbour at Whitby and the Lake Ontario shipping routes.
A grain elevator is built that is now considered Canada's oldest. Grain arriving on the new railway made Port Perry a busy shipping point, and the building survives as a heritage landmark.
On January 1, Port Perry, Scugog, Reach and Cartwright come together to form today's Township of Scugog under the new Regional Municipality of Durham. Port Perry remains its largest community and commercial hub.
In April council approves resurfacing about 3 km of local roads in Port Perry and a modular replacement for the aging Scugog Line 2 culvert, while the Region plans road improvements and a multi-use path on Reach Street. By September the average home sells for $1,014,328, up 3.9% since January.
